After returning from a long weekend in Tarifa, the high is yet to diminish. I spent 3 days in the beautiful Spanish destination of Tarifa, taking part in one of our new clinics, which also run in Maui, and Mauritius.
   I arrived late Friday night at the beautiful Las Flores, and was made to feel so welcome. The apartments look like an old French style house surrounded by flowers.
   In the morning I met the group at the centre where we slouched on oversized beanbags overlooking the beach. We discussed which sports we liked, a bit about ourselves, as you do, and what we wanted to get out of the clinic. We were also handed brand new, in the bag ION lycra tops, bonus!
   The wind was light in the morning, so we took out a fleet of SUP boards, and paddled downwind to another centre, where we loaded up the van and took the boards back to the first centre. On the way back we stopped at a cool rocky stair case. I’m not entirely sure what it was, and clambering up it definitely didn’t comply with EU safety regulations but it was cool! We got the top to find some amazing views of Tarifa, and a small room.
   After lunch, the group announced that everyone wanted to go Kitesurfing. I mentioned that I loved windsurfing, and even with just one person looking at the other sport, Chris, an instructor immediately offered to come with me. Though deciding it was about time to nail Kitesurfing I opted for that. The group was broken down in to beginners, intermediates, and advanced. We spent some time on the water, then the intermediates and advanced set off on a downwind trip. This was a great way to practice kite and board control, as there was no thinking about going up wind, as isn’t something many instructors suggest for intermediates, as they are usually tied to being close to their centre.
   After a great day on the water, we all shared a bottomless welcome cocktail, and arranged to pick each other up and go for dinner. The restaurant was just down the road, and served terrific food. With a range of meats, fishes, salads, and sandwiches. The steaks in particular were very, very good, and the beer was cheap.
   The mornings begin with the choice of either a yoga session or beach workout, both are completely optional. At the start of the clinic it is made clear that you can choose to do whatever you want, and shouldn’t feel obliged to participate in everything.
   In the morning the whole group did a downwind windsurf, which was a fun way to learn. In the afternoon we did similar the previous day with a kite session on the water followed by a downwinder.
   By Monday the swell had begun to pick up, so we took out some SUP boards and surf boards. Unfortunately for me I had to leave in the afternoon to catch my flight as I had to be in the UK the following day. Not wanting to leave was bad, but after hearing that morning all the activities lined up for the week, I was gutted. The group had paddling the strait of Gibraltar to look forward to, along with mountain biking an awesome route, and spending time with legendary North kiter Jaime.
   Overall I had a fantastic time, I loved the group, the level of instruction, all the extras, being on the water all day despite conditions, the big bean bags, the level on instruction, Las Flores, the list goes on.

You will never be bored in Cabarete! Which is what makes it such a great place to be.

This place offers almost everything when it comes to watersports, from flatwater freestyle windsurfing, to SUP’ing on the reef. Once you’ve finished on the water for the day, you can relax at the bars with the food and drink happy hours rolling.

Although Cabarete is most famous for the consistent wind and waves, there is also a whole load of other activities to get involved with. There is a fantastic gym at Kite Beach called MiGym, which has daily classes of spinning, core attack and yoga, with an insanely flexible yoga teacher. These classes are all run with a really high standard so you’re guaranteed a good workout. The room for yoga and core attack is high up, has no walls, and looks straight over Kite Beach, it truly is an amazing place to practice yoga and core attack.

So what to do between early morning surfs, and afternoon sailing? There’s a choice from, Canyoning, Mountain Biking, Cascading, Paragliding, Snorkelling, Diving, Kayaking, Trapezing, Jui Jitsu, Skating, Horseback riding, Zip-lining, Monkey Jungle, or just relaxing!

Away from the sports in Cabarete there is also a great nightlife along the beach, where there is a diverse row of bars and restaurants, each one unique. The themes range from traditional Dominican restaurants, all the way to sports bars, and everything in between. However, it’s definitely worth spending a bit of time and asking some locals about other restaurants a few minutes out of town where you will find traditional Dominican dishes cooked at a really high standard, accompanied by beer at almost cost price. An example of a dish you should try is the churrasco steak; it’s cut thin, then marinated and barbequed. The favourite by far!

Another great thing about Cabarete is that you will never be short of good, live music to listen to. Whatever night of the week it is, there is always a bar with live music, varying from reggae nights to solo artists. However, most importantly, you don’t want to miss karaoke Mondays at the VoyVoy bar. Whatever the weather, whatever stage in the season, this place is guaranteed to be packed! OK, the music can be far from great, but the atmosphere is fantastic. This same bar also sells ridiculously cheap pitchers of mojito, a great combination.

If you speak to people who have spent a lot of time here, they will often tell you that they love Cabarete because ‘everything goes’. There’s no stereotype for someone from Cabarete, you can be whoever you want to be, it’s a pretty quirkey place.

Cabarete is not a typical holiday destination, where the atmosphere is a façade to hide the reality that you’re in a third world country. You really should make the most of your visit by visiting local restaurants that are not in the centre of town, and using the local transport is amazing fun. The ‘Gaugaus’ are the Domincan version of buses, just a bit more laid back and unstructured!

A lot of people who come here also enjoy helping out with one of the local charities, such as The Mariposa Foundation or DREAM project, and really get involved with the friendly community. It doesn’t take much, just go down and show the kids how to do something for the afternoon, from art to sport. It’s a great way to meet people, practice your Spanish, and really help the local kids out with their English which is invaluable.

We visited this spot twice last year and had the best the wind record and basically kited ourselves to a standstill. As long as the sun shines here then you will have wind. A true thermal wind spot. The scenery is stunning, the town unspoilt and great instructors. A really special spot.
