Mauritius Trip Report
Matt @ Planet has recently returned from an awesome Kitesurfing trip in Mauritius. We are now entering into super reliable wind months for all over Mauritius and you can read the trip report here……
The main purpose of my trip was to catch up on what is happening in Mauritius since our last trip (back in early 2009). I also have visited to get a feel for the East and North East of the Island which we now feature as amazing kitesurfing spots.
Le Morne – South West Mauritius
My first stop was La Gaulette Studios on the road between La Gaulette and Le Morne – These charming condos provide fantastic value for those seeking a trip outside of the Resort setups. This was a very spacious studio with good facilities including air con, kitchen with fridge, cooker and microwave etc. A lovely partial sea facing veranda is on the rear of the property. I had hired a car for the duration and this proved to be perfect with this property.
For those wanting a little more luxury or those trying to keep the non-kiters happy!! Then the route down to Le Morne offers The 5* Lux Le Morne and the soon to be opened 5* St Regis Le Morne. Both properties are of an extremely high standard offering spectacular ocean views, spa treatments, watersports services and are within 5 mins from Le Morne Kitesurf lagoon and the Skyriders centre. We have some amazing discounts and offers for both of these properties!
The 4* Indian Resort is the property that has currently come under the spotlight with a lot of negative press. I stayed here for 3 nights and was pleasantly surprised with the resort. The important thing to remember is that this is the only property right on the kite spot and within a small walk from the Le Morne Lagoon. It is receiving a refit to it’s three on site properties and as I write the only one that is open is Le Mornea (which is closest to the Kitesurf centre). It is still a good choice in Le Morne but not the best. Hopefully after this year and after the renovations we can look at this as the 4* we have always known.
The kitesurfing was incredible – each day was 17-25 Knots (between 4 and 5 BFT) – the prevailing wind is from the East / South East so onshore / cross onshore. This is perfectly safe within the confines of the lagoon in Le Morne. There are hundreds of yards of knee-waist height water even at low tide and this makes it perfect for learning and honing existing skills. Pleun and Ben at the Skyriders centre have a great set up with the latest North gear for all wind conditions. I would recommend booties for this spot as there are bits of old coral underfoot!
La Gaulette provides a couple of bars and restaurants for those wanting to get out the resorts in the evening. There is a great kitesurfing community set around the Ocean Vagabond bar and restaurant in La Gaulette. A little further north is Flic en Flaq which is a vibrant holiday resort with plenty of bars and restaurants. For those looking for other activities The South West part of the Island offers a huge amount of choice. Trekking and hiking through Black River Gorge, Walking with big cats at Casela Park, Zip Lining, Helicopter rides, Scuba Diving, Golf and visiting UNESCO heritage sites including Mount Brabant – to name but a few.
Belle Mare – East Mauritius
For the remainder of my trip I travelled an hour and a half across the Island to Belle Mare. This is one of the longest stretches of beach in Mauritius and I stayed at the wonderful 4* La Palmeraie Hotel. This is a great value Half Board or All Inclusive boutique hotel. The style is of an authentic Moroccan Riad and is one of the few properties that is directly on the beach (most have gardens between beach and hotel). I stayed in a Beachfront room with a 180°view of the flat water infront of the property. If you are looking for a fantastic quality property with a kite surf centre onsite and NOT a big resort style hotel then this is definitely the choice to make – I loved it here and the small touches really made the difference.
I visited 5* Lux Belle Mare (formerly Beau Rivage) which is a 2 minute boat ride from the kite beach and the boat house will happily take you down on a daily basis as well as pick you up. This is a true 5* resort and comes highly recommended for those looking for a high quality trip. There are so many organised events and activities within the hotel – a really good Kids Club set and nightly projected movies on the beach with the Lux brand of ice cream. The hotel as prides itself on roasting and grinding its own coffee – this is then sent around the island to the other Lux hotels. We currently have a 25% Early Booking Offer on this hotel
Next on the site visit was 5* Long Beach Hotel and 5* Belle Mare Plage these two properties sit next to each other in the North of Belle Mar. They are stunning and offer a superior quality property to stay at – the compromise is that you are a 5-10 mins taxi ride from the Kitesurf spot.
The wind each day was 17-25 Knots (between 4 and 5 BFT) – so again perfect!!!! The cross / onshore direction makes this spot super safe and with an empty beach, loads of room. There is a superb reef break around 500m off shore that kicks up some great waves. Clean breaking left and right handers off the reef – perfect for wave riding, surfing and SUPing too. The centre based on the beach at La Palmeraie features great instruction and kit rental – they also rent SUP boards for those looking to test their wave skills!!!!
There are loads of other things to do on this side of the island too. Scuba diving is very popular as well as Golf, cycling and sky diving if you fancy it!!!! I consider the East Coast to be a little more of a sedate trip but can be made exciting by including some of the activities available.
I will be posting a review of the North of the Island as this will be a new destination to be launched this month – loads of great accommodation and a couple of really good kite surf spots – WATCH THIS SPACE
