CAYMAN ISLANDS KITESURF HOLIDAY OVERVIEW
The three islands which today make up the stunning Cayman Islands, were discovered by Christopher Columbus when he got lost on his voyage to Hispaniola. Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman are the three islands, each one with it’s own personality. Grand Cayman is by far the biggest of all, and is the main tourist island, with big cruise ships stopping over, and being a world renowned dive resort, it is popular among many people as a holiday destination. Cayman Brac is much smaller, with a small population of around 1800, and does not have any building taller than one storey. Little Cayman is described best by it’s name, it is the smallest of all islands, is home to only 200 people, and not much else!
The Cayman islands are recognised today as the safest and cleanest of all the Caribbean Islands.
Along with Kitesurfing, Diving is also hugely popular on the island, and is the perfect alternative to kitesurfing on any non windy days. The new craze of Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) is also really special on the island, as the Caymans some of the best and most reliable bioluminescence on the planet. Bioluminescence causes the water to glow bright blue when the paddle hits the water at night.
THE KITESURFING SPOT IN GRAND CAYMAN
Most of the kitesurfing takes place along the southeast coast of Grand Cayman where the wind blows cross onshore. The area is made up on a 5 mile lagoon which is waist deep up to 100 metres offshore, where the water reaches 5 metres in depth, which then returns to waist deep a few hundred metres further out. This sand bar is an incredibly easy and safe place to learn how to kitesurf. There are no obstacles, and with such a large kiting area, other kiters have enough space to keep out of your way.
There is a reef 1 mile off shore, which follows the kiting area the whole way around. Outside the reef are waves which break over the reef and are great for advanced kiters, and as an introduction to waves for intermediates. The whole of the lagoon inside the reef is flat.
Due to the curved shape of the coast, the wind stays cross-on the whole way.
