After your first night in Teresina, you continue your following day to Raimundo Nonato and the Serra da Capivara which is the National Park. This park is a UNESCO world heritage where you can see some endemic animal and plant species but this park is famous for its prehistoric rock art.
After these first days, you will take a flight from Teresina to colonial Sao Luis for one night over there.Sao Luis is the capital or the Brazilian state of Maranhao. It's a French colonial city, she was founded by French in 1612. In Sao Luis you can explore its streets with buildings and the historic center which has been listed a World heritage site by UNESCO. In Sao Luis you can also enjoy the typical cuisine, popular tradition, festivals and lively reggae parties that make the culture of Sao Luis stand out among Brazilian cities.
You will start your journey to visit the stunning white-powder dunes and blue lagoons in Lencois Maranhenses. You will enjoy the boat along the Rio Preguicas with his small river settlements before reaching the Atlantic coast. Then you will be transferred to the river port of Parnaiba.
In Lencois Maranhenses, the shifting dunes with the lakes in between are most spectacular at low sun, when a range of shadows come into play. Just after sunrise is probably the very best because of lower temperatures. Best time to visit is May - September, after the rains, and before the lakes dry out.
Most tourists pass by Parnaiba for visiting the river delta, or on their way between Lençois Maranhenses and Jericoacoara. However, Parnaíba has its own charm, including nearby beaches.
