Why you should visit Corralejo, Fuerteventura

Corralejo is a town located in the northeast end of the Canary Island Fuerteventura. Corralejo is the largest holiday resort in Fuerteventura, spanning approximately 3 kilometres in diameter. The town is split into sections, the new town and old town. The old town of Corralejo is what was originally a small fishing village.

Today, the old houses play host to small bars, restaurants, and shops designed for tourists. The newer end of town is made up of hotels and resorts built to accommodate the massive number of tourists that have found the island to be a beautiful and scenic paradise ideal for a holiday in the sun.

What to expect from a holiday in Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura may not be the most picturesque island when it comes to greenery, but what it lacks in forests and lakes it certainly makes up for in every other aspect as an ideal holiday destination.

Corralejo is roughly 40 minutes away from the airport and has a lot to offer its visitors. The main street is about 3
kilometres long and is packed with an amazing array of shops as well as some pleasant bars and restaurants. You can also hire cars, motorbikes, scooters or push bikes here if you want to explore the town.

On a Friday and Sunday, there is a great market that can be found behind the water park with some bargains to be had as well as some unusual island purchases.

Corralejo harbour is not just quaint, but also very active offering trips to all the local islands as well as the usual glass-bottom boat trips and daily booze cruises. You can also find jet skis, speed boats and guided tours here. This is also a great little place for spotting some of the local fish that swim about in the clear blue water.

Things to do in Corralejo

With great weather all year round in Fuerteventura the different types of activities are endless. The beautiful sandy beaches and blue sea means that all forms of water sports are available in Corralejo. Surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and snorkelling are just some of them. When you’re not out on the water you can try out a buggy excursion through the mountains or even take a tour on a custom trike.

The Corralejo Dunes Natural Park is located in the municipality of La Oliva, southeast of Corralejo. It houses not only the biggest but the best sand dunes in the Canary Islands. It is 6,425 acres long and will make you feel as if you’re traversing the sands of the African continent. The white sand dunes are made from the disintegration of shells and molluscs. There are over 18 species of flora and fauna inhabiting the sand dunes. Fossils of mason bees’ nests can also be found in the park. These fossils date back several millennia when Fuerteventura had a more humid climate and muddy soil areas.

Molinos (tower mills), molinas (open trestle mills), and lime kilns are widespread throughout Corralejo and other parts of Fuerteventura. They are reminiscent of the town and the island’s economy and way of life. The most outstanding is the El Cotillo lime kilns whose products are still exported. Other examples can be found in Villaverde, El Roque, and La Olivia.

The white sandy beaches of Corralejo extend far and wide. The town beach is perfect for families as it’s clean, safe, sheltered and surrounded by restaurants.

Corralejo has developed hugely over the past 10-15 years and has become more and more popular each year. The town has so much to offer tourists and residents. Why not try Corralejo for your next kitesurfing holiday?
