The home of the ancient Incas and enigmatic Machu Picchu, Peru is currently making a name for itself as one of the world’s premier food destinations. But in kitesurfing circles, it’s also making waves as one of the most unique destinations – or should that be in the singular? As it’s home to the world’s longest kitesurfing wave.

Pacasmayo

You’ll have to travel north from the national and gastronomic capital Lima to the more deserted shores of Northern Peru. This is a region known for its miles of endless desert, remote towns and wild landscapes. But over the last decade or so, more and more surfers and kiters have been heading here to check out Pacasmayo.

This small town is where you’ll find arguably the world’s longest kiteable wave. And is even regarded by some as the best kitesurfing spot in the world. It’s all backdropped by what looks like Death Valley, which is a little weird as you’re right next to the ocean. There are few other towns, roads are sparse and you generally feel isolated travelling here. But it’s well worth the effort and there’s more than enough in the small town to keep you busy.

Of course, it’s not just Pacasmayo where you can kitesurf in northern Peru. It’s also home to several other top resorts.
