From the moment that we left the airport with our very friendly driver, we knew that this would be an amazing trip. We had just flown in over the island of Mauritius<\/a> and could see what a tropical paradise it is. The drive along the coast road to The Outrigger<\/a> Mauritius Resort and Spa is about an hour, so we settled back in our seats and enjoyed our first close-up view of the island and its wonderful beaches. <\/p>\n

Daylight in Mauritius is pretty constant throughout the year, with sunrise and sunset happening at about 6am and 6pm every day. As we had arrived late in  the afternoon, by the time we arrived at The Outrigger it was dark – which only made the sight of their massive reception hall even more impressive. We were greeted with cold drinks, and even colder towels, to freshen up while we were  checked in and then we were taken to our family suite. The light and airy room consisted of a main bedroom, a second bedroom with bunk beds and a huge bathroom while a rollaway bed is also available for a famiy of five. <\/p>\n

Once we had unpacked we took a stroll over to the main buffet restaurant, The Mercado Market, for our first taste of the Outrigger’s cuisine, and what a taste it was. The serving areas are divided by country of origin and, on our first night we had the choice of North and South Asian, Chinese, Indian and Portuguese food, with a separate section devoted to food for the younger ones. There was also a huge array of desserts to tempt us – and we didn’t take much tempting. <\/p>\n

After a fantastic night’s sleep, we opened the curtains and took in the amazing view from our balcony. Across a small lawn we could see a swimming pool to the right and to the left, the sea. Gentle waves lapped the shore with the coral reef providing a great natural barrier and sun loungers with sunshades were placed on both the beach and the lawn.<\/p>\n

Breakfast was served in the main buffet restaurant and, once again, the serving areas were divided up to avoid having to queue for food. Whether your choice is continental fare or the full English\/American breakfast, there is plenty of fresh food on offer, some of which is cooked to order.<\/p>\n

Throughout the day there are a variety of water sports for us to enjoy while the kitesurfing, windsurfing and stand-up paddleboarding is offered at the centre further along the beach. Kayaks, pedalos, snorkelling, sailing and trips on the glass bottomed boat are just some of the many complimentary recreation opportunities that are available at The Outrigger.<\/p>\n

Bar Bleu was our choice for lunch as their service is offered indoors, on the beach, and poolside and we took our dinner at Edgewater where, to fulfill a lifelong dream of mine, they set us at a table on the beach while we enjoyed a sumptuous meal of local Mauritian dishes and contemporary Eurasian fare.<\/p>\n

Other dining options include Willie’s Rum and Crab Shack which offers a nightly seafood barbecue or you can enjoy a feast of modern Mauritian Cuisine at the very exclusive Plantation Club – for which reservations are highly recommended.<\/p>\n

The wonderful location, superbly attentive staff and vast array of amenities made The Outrigger Resort and Spa the perfect choice for us. We were able to sit back and relax or take to the water and have fun without a care in the world.
