Kite, SUP, Yoga in Langebaan

Langebaan lagoon on the west coast of South Africa recently provided a magical setting for one of our team as she joined a week of kiting, SUPing and yoga with Windtown. Keep reading to see what she got up to!

The kiting in Langebaan

Travelling in March, meant I caught the tail end of South Africa’s windy season and was only able to enjoy the kitesurfing part at the very end of my trip. Never the less it gave me something to look forward to during the week and by the time the wind did eventually pick up the entire group was fired up and ready to go!

Langebaan lagoon provides the perfect place for beginners to get into the sport with a flat, shallow lagoon, ideal cross-shore winds and a large sandy area to launch and land.

As most of the group had never kited before, the first couple of lessons involved the basics of kite flying, some body dragging and eventually some frustrating, but hilarious attempts at water starts. Throughout it all, the professional team at Windtown was there to reassure us, lend a helping hand and some guidance at every step of the way, making the learning experience an easy one! I would highly recommend joining a trip like this if you want to learn to kitesurf as you get the best instruction, enabling you to learn quicker, can enjoy the experience with like-minded individuals and on the days when the wind isn’t quite right, there is always loads of other activities to enjoy.

The stand up paddle boarding and a little bit of yoga

With the wind only picking up towards the end of the week, the first half of our adventure involved exploring the picturesque lagoon on the back of a stand up paddle board. With a number of beaches and a wide expanse of flat water beckoning, Langebaan provides the perfect place to learn to SUP.

We enjoyed paddles around the island in the middle of the lagoon, to the warm, crystal clear waters of Kraal Braai and a drift with the current to Shark Bay where sand sharks and beautiful views were a treat for tired eyes. To master the balance required for a good few days of paddle boarding, daily yoga sessions were held at the hotel each morning and even a SUP-Yoga session was attempted on the water – with various degrees of success!

The accommodation

After tough, long days on the water, there is nothing better than coming back to a luxurious hotel that provides all the comfort you could long for, with none of the fuss. That was just what Windtown’s Langebaan Lagoon Hotel provided during our week of SUPing, kiting and yoga! The hotel’s pool, surrounded by plush beanbags, was the perfect place to catch a tan with a good book, the soft king size beds the ideal spot to catch a nap and the unassuming restaurant’s delicious cuisine provided a fine selection of sustenance to keep our weary bodies going. And all this at just a short walk from the water!

Other things to do in the area

There is so much to do in Langebaan when you want to take a break from the water. Just a few minutes drive and you can enjoy a relaxed safari with sightings of zebra and giraffe at Thali Thali Game Reserve or rent a mountain bike and meander into the West Coast National Park for some exercise and bird watching.

There are also a number of bars and restaurants along the beachfront where you can take in the action on the water or head down to the famous Strandloper for an afternoon of traditional West Coast cuisine served off an open fire!

All in all a fine week was had by all and we can’t wait to return to do it all over again! Looking to join a similar guided trip or want to tailor make your own kitesurfing and SUPing adventure, be sure to contact us today.
