Mauritius: Kitesurfing Heaven on Earth

Kitesurfing in Mauritius has to be one of the definite boxes to tick in any kiter’s destination bucket list. Not only does it have two of the Indian Ocean’s infamous waves in One-Eye and Manawa, it also offers possibly one of the best flat water lagoons in the world located walkable distance from these epic waves. I am, of course, talking about Kitesurfing in Le Morne.

Reliable winds that come from a South Easterly direction allow the South West corner to experience amazing flat conditions in the lagoon and barrelling waves at the reef breaks. Manawa can considered big and chunky but provides a great wave for riding. With a clean, peeling face, plenty of room for bottom turns and loads of power to boot. One-Eye closes out quick and is not for the fainthearted! For experienced wave riders only, it provides an adrenaline rush like no other in Mauritius – one mistake and the reef certainly comes into play. You are able to launch from the public kite beach but it is recommended to check in with the local centre prior to accessing these spots – there are fast currents and safety instructions that need to be adhered to if you want them to provide the rescue services that are needed.

The lagoon is where most of the learn to kitesurf instruction and skill honing takes place – flat, shallow water combined with cross/cross on-shore winds makes this a super safe environment to learn as a newbie and also progress as an intermediate kiter. The lagoon is kiteable at all times even though tidal and attracts plenty of people due the water conditions. The local centre has a fully stocked and working kite centre on the lagoon itself – they will provide instruction, rental and rescue services from here for those that require it.

Le Morne is geographically set in the South West corner of Mauritius, it benefits from very reliable wind stats during the months May to October, however winds can definitely be present outside of these months. The earliest of these months coincide with ‘low season’ where the accommodations are priced at their lowest what perfect mix!

Talking of accommodation, Le Morne offers a myriad of choices from the amazing and luxurious 5* St Regis Resort to fantastic value at the modestly priced Indian Resort, Moreva and Mornea hotels. Somewhere in between but still true 5* is the Lux, Le Morne. All the accommodation provide something for all tastes and budgets – they all happen to be walking distance from the kitesurf spots.
