What to look for in a great kitesurf hotel

You’ve booked your tickets, packed your bags, and set off on another exciting kitesurfing adventure. Only when you arrive, you’re in for a big disappointment. The hotel is miles from the beach, the rooms are small and dirty, the staff unhelpful and there’s nowhere to keep your kit. Even if the kiting conditions are superb, it really takes the shine off your trip. So, it’s important that you find a hotel that’s going to tick all your kiting boxes.

Here’s what to look for when making your choice of the best kitesurfing hotel:

Location, location, location

You could stay in a luxurious five-star hotel but if its 45 minutes from the beach then you’re going to spend an awful lot of your holiday in the van. Look for a hotel that’s on or near the best kite spots. Right on the beach is obviously the dream but a few minutes’ walk is usually fine. A great kiting hotel will also have transport available to take you to other spots if you want a change of scenery.

Hotel reviews

The age of the internet has democratised travel in many ways, but most obviously through reviews. Back in the day, you’d book a hotel through an agent and have no way of knowing what other visitors thought of it. These days a quick Google search and you can find hundreds of reviews from other guests. Of course, this does open it up to random complaints. You can’t always keep everyone happy, so you do have to take some reviews with a pinch of salt. But the more positive reviews there are, the more accurate it becomes. And if a hotel has no reviews at all, unless it is brand new, it’s probably not a good sign.

Kite storage space

If you’re bringing lots of kiting kit with you, having a safe and easily accessible place to store it during your stay is a real must. You don’t really want your sandy wetsuit hanging up in the shower all week, so a secure kit room always comes in handy.

Local knowledge

Service and friendly staff are a must, it goes without saying. But what you really want at a great kitesurf hotel is some inside information about the best kiting spots. We’re talking the real local inside track, away from all the other tourists. This kind of information is priceless and can be the difference between a good trip and a truly legendary one. Even if it’s not the staff, then having other likeminded guests who can share their tips and insight can also make a real difference to your holiday.

That little extra

Ultimately, all anyone wants from accommodation is to feel welcome and comfortable. Even if you’re not going for all-out luxury, staff and service that goes that little further always makes a big difference. Drivers that drive you to better conditions. Staff who help you load and unload your kit. A little upgrade because there’s a spare room. That’s what makes a great kitesurfing hotel.
