A kitesurfer’s review of Fuerteventura

One of Planet Kitesurf Holiday’s clients, Jon, recently returned from a family kitesurfing holiday to gorgeous Matas Bay in Fuerteventura, the second largest of Spain’s Canary Islands. In his words it was, “a great hassle free trip!” Read more about what he had to say in his review below:

“We got several good kite sessions in despite the weather patterns – apparently numerous clouds were messing up the offshore wind. However, most days there was normally a couple of hours one could get out, so we got plenty of time on the water. The kite centre at Matas Bay had a fantastic attitude and vibe and the gang were very friendly, very good and really on it in terms of rescue. We were initially hesitant about kiting in offshore winds, but with a great rescue service and relatively flat water, it was great. We both got a jet ski ride back to shore when the wind had just died and when we were learning on strapless boards. We really enjoyed the lessons and learnt a lot with the high standard of tuition.

We stayed at the Sercotel Costa Calma and it was great for the family. A four star hotel, which offered a five star building and grounds, however you are still expected to pay a deposit for pool towels that you kept for the week (pretty average service) as well as WiFi and there was no pool side service for food. Other than these minor points, the food was very good and the buffets offered something for everyone. I think at that price point it was very good value for money and there were no complaints from the family (kids, parents and grandparents), they all had a fantastic stay.

At the end of the week our seven year old son also enjoyed two, one hour, one on one windsurf lessons and he managed to pick it up really quickly thanks to the coach Sebastian’s windsurf skills and ability to enthuse him. The surprise jet ski ride around the bay on his 7th birthday from the Matas Bay team was the icing on the cake for him. We highly recommend the centre and Matas Bay.
