Pacasmayo: The world’s longest kitesurfing wave

The home of the ancient Incas and enigmatic Machu Picchu, Peru is currently making a name for itself as one of the world’s premier food destinations. But in kitesurfing circles, it’s also making waves as one of the most unique destinations – or should that be in the singular? As it’s home to the world’s longest kitesurfing wave.

Pacasmayo
You’ll have to travel north from the national and gastronomic capital Lima to the more deserted shores of Northern Peru. This is a region known for its miles of endless desert, remote towns and wild landscapes. But over the last decade or so, more and more surfers and kiters have been heading here to check out Pacasmayo.

This small town is where you’ll find arguably the world’s longest kiteable wave. And is even regarded by some as the best kitesurfing spot in the world. It’s all backdropped by what looks like Death Valley, which is a little weird as you’re right next to the ocean. There are few other towns, roads are sparse and you generally feel isolated travelling here. But it’s well worth the effort and there’s more than enough in the small town to keep you busy.

Of course, it’s not just Pacasmayo where you can kitesurf in northern Peru. It’s also home to several other top resorts.

Mancora
This dusty little town is where you’ll find a buzzing kiting scene. There’s plenty of available accommodation along the beach – including some more upmarket boutique style lodges. There’s also some excellent waves for kiting and surfing. But it’s best to go with a guide both to find the best spots and to stay safe.

With a season that runs from May to October and some top conditions for kiting, this is a great place to visit in combination with Pacasmayo.

Paracas
It’s not just northern Peru where the kiting is superb either. Just to the south of Lima you’ll find the small town of Paracas. The main kiting spot is Santo Domingo. There’s some perfect learning conditions for beginners here in the U-shaped bay. Cross shore winds and mainly shallow waters, in which you can stand, make it even better for learning the basics.

More advanced riders will enjoy the flat water where you can pick up some big speed and work on some freestyle moves. If you’re looking for something a little more advanced, there are some top waves spots nearby along the coast in the nature reserve. Go with a guide to make sure you’re safe and can check out the best waves.

With the world’s longest kiting wave, rugged conditions in the north of the country and gentler winds for beginners in the south, Peru is one of the world’s premier kiting destinations. Bookend any of your kiting trips with a stay in Lima and you can also sample some of the stunning food that is putting this South American country on the map.
