Overview Kasbah du Toubkal retreat

Whilst Marrakech is in itself a fascinating city, a whole new experience awaits those who venture south into the Atlas Mountains. With several peaks above 4000 metres, the Central High Atlas is part of a larger chain of mountains that spreads from the Atlantic Coast in the west to the Algerian border in the east. The mountains are home to the indigenous Berber (or Amazigh) people who have inhabited Morocco for at least 5000 years. The Berbers live in small clusters of earthen adobe houses which cling precipitously to mountainsides and are often only accessible by mule or foot.

A trek in the High Atlas will offer more than a glimpse into a way of life that has barely changed for centuries and where traditional values and hospitality have been mostly unaffected by the outside world.

The Kasbah du Toubkal (1800m), just 60km from Marrakech (so day excursions from Marrakech easily arranged), is situated at the foot of Jbel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. Described by Condé Nast Traveller as “having the best rooftop views in North Africa”, it is a Berber Hospitality centre (hotel/auberge stressing hospitality over traditional hotel service) for individuals and groups. There is a shared belief that the beauty of the Toubkal National Park should be accessible to all who respect it. To this end the Kasbah has been transformed using traditional methods and is a welcoming environment for those seeking comfortable mountain refuge. This is not a hotel in the traditional sense, it is more an extension of the hospitality that stems from the home of the Berbers who run it.

Kasbah du Toubkal Accommodation

For those who wish for superb rooms in a stunning setting, you can choose between the spectacular Garden House (125 sq m) with its 12 m of glass wall looking up to Jbel Toubkal, the Deluxe and Standard en suite rooms, or Berber Salons with gallery sleeping areas for families and groups.

Garden House – Suites - On the south side of the Kasbah and slightly lower down is the Garden House. This is a 3-bedroomed house with its own entrance and a stunning lounge with an open fire and a 12 metre plate glass wall looking up towards the mountains and the peak of Jbel Toubkal.

It is especially suitable for those guests who wish to have more privacy and their own private lounge, dining room and kitchen. There is no need, although it would be a shame, to even visit the Kasbah.
