Barra do Cunhaú (close to Pipa) is one of the best kitesurfing locations in Brazil, yet it remains a hidden gem that is little known outside Latin America. Tucked away on the north east coast in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, this small fishing village has everything a kitesurfer dreams of but without the crowds that gather at more famous spots. Wide golden beaches, steady trade winds and calm flat water lagoons sit side by side with gentle wave breaks, creating an incredible natural playground that suits every riding style. The atmosphere is laid back and unspoilt, with coconut groves, small beach huts and a warm local community that has not yet been touched by mass tourism. For anyone looking to experience authentic Brazil alongside world-class conditions on the water, Barra do Cunhaú is a remarkable find.
The best time to visit is from August through to February, when the winds blow almost every day. From August to November, the wind is at its strongest (20-30 knots). From December to February the winds tend to be lighter, although very consistent day to day, so this period is very good for Kitefoiling. Wingfoiling, and learning to Kitesurf (especially for kids). You can ride from morning until evening with hardly a pause, making it one of the most reliable places in the country for long kitesurf sessions.
Off the water, there are a lot of other activities. A river SUP of canoe trip along the Curimataú River passes through lush mangroves full of birdlife. The nearby town of Canguaretama shows you local markets and everyday Brazilian life. A 30-minute bike ride takes you to Pipa, a lively town known for its cliffs, restaurants and dolphin watching. Other highlights include Chapadão, a dramatic red cliff overlooking the ocean, and Praia do Amor, a heart-shaped beach that is one of the most photographed in the region.
What makes Barra do Cunhaú truly special is how under the radar it still feels. Outside Latin America, very few travellers have heard of it, yet it offers some of the best and most consistent kitesurf conditions in Brazil. It combines the thrill of steady wind and diverse water conditions with the charm of an untouched coastal village. For kite surfers who want more than just a busy beach and who are searching for something genuine, peaceful and exceptional, Barra do Cunhaú is an incredible hidden treasure waiting to be discovered.
