Kitesurfing In Mui Ne

Mui Ne is quickly becoming a South East Asian Mecca for kiteboarding and windsurfing. Mui Ne has the best conditions in all of Asia for water sports because it has Asia's strongest and most consistent cross-onshore winds and the lowest rainfall in Vietnam. Every day is a perfect day. You may ask why you haven't heard of it, if it's so great? The reason is the tourism industry has only existed for about 10 years in this province. The development is new, and this best-kept secret has only just been discovered.



The area is often referred to by the water sports industry as "Mui Ne Bay," although the bay is more correctly the "Bay of Phan Thiet" (Phan Thiet is the provincial capital of Binh Thuan Province and lies in the centre of the bay). Depths in the bay are irregular, and a bank with depths of less than 5.5m, extends 1.5 miles west of Mui Ne. The true name of Mui Ne Beach is actually "Rang" but the tourist industry refers to it as Mui Ne, after the village on the point.

Mui Ne Resort Overview

Mui Ne, in the south-east of Vietnam, has become the country's kiteboarding and windsurfing capital, and in season you can count on the wind day after day.

The province around it, Binh Thuan, has a bit of everything. There are tropical beaches lined with palm trees, and giant dunes of red, yellow and white sand that roll on for kilometres. Head inland and you'll find rivers full of fish and crabs, mountains covered in bamboo forest, waterfalls, and deep red canyons cut by streams, with the calls of tropical birds all around.

Mui Ne's beach is yellow sand. The middle of the bay up to the northern end is busier with fishing boats, so for swimming and sunbathing, the southern end is the place to be.

Away from the water, the dunes are the big attraction. There are three sets that are easy to visit by bike, motorbike, motorbike taxi or jeep. Mui Ne is still a young resort with a laid-back feel, and the people are some of the friendliest in Vietnam.

Spots Around Mui Ne

Full Moon Beach is at its best in the dry season, with side-shore wind of 18 to 30 knots that sometimes reaches 40. In the rainy season it's more like 14 knots, which is still enough for a fun cruise up to Mui Ne and back, 8km each way. There's always an anemometer on the beach, and 15 knots there often means 20 knots once you're 200m out.

Suoi Nuoc is onshore and full-on, with big waves every windy day. Nearby there are plenty of beaches that hardly anyone has ridden, and they're great to explore by jeep.

Hon Rom Beach is best from November to the end of April, with a regular onshore wind of around 30 knots, a shore break and no coral. Head for the sand dunes and carry on for 1.5km to reach it. The waves get smaller the further east you go and bigger to the west, and the spot is known as the Cemetery.

Ke Ga is home to Vietnam's tallest lighthouse, built by the French in 1897 and still working. In the dry season there are good waves just left of the lighthouse. It's 30km south-west of Phan Thiet on a bumpy road, but it's well worth the trip, and you can even drive on the old airfield.

Phu Quy Island, about 125km off the coast from Phan Thiet, has a bit of everything: waves, flat water, a lagoon, clear water and white sandy beaches. It's a beautiful spot.

The Wind In Mui Ne

Vietnam gets 230 days a year with more than 12 knots of wind. From November to April it's the dry season in Mui Ne, and that's when the north-east wind really blows. It's regular, it can be gusty, and it gets up to 40 knots.

Summer is gentler. The wind is lighter, the waves are small and the mornings bring light side-onshore breezes, so it's a more relaxed time to be on the water. July and August are the rainy months and can feel pleasantly cool, but there's still wind, and this corner of Vietnam has the least rain in the country. From September to December the big waves roll in. That's great for experienced riders, but it's not the time for beginners.

Other Water Sports And Days Out

Kitesurfing is just one of the water sports at Mui Ne Beach. You can also windsurf, paddleboard, kayak or surf, and on days off the water there are trips inland to historical and cultural sites.

Evenings In Mui Ne

Mui Ne is all about seafood, and some of the restaurants will cook the day's catch right in front of you. It's a laid-back resort, and after a full day of kiting most people are knackered, so nights tend to be low-key. Places come and go, so take a stroll along the sand and see what you find.

Passports And Visas

British passport holders can visit Vietnam for up to 45 days without a visa. For a longer stay you can apply for an e-visa, which allows up to 90 days and more than one entry. Your passport must have at least six months left on it when you arrive, and at least two blank pages. It mustn't be damaged either, as British travellers have been turned away over damaged passports.

Health And Vaccinations

Vietnam only asks for one vaccination certificate, yellow fever, and only if you're arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever, such as parts of Africa and South America. For other vaccinations, check the Vietnam page on TravelHealthPro or ask your GP or a travel clinic.

Flying To Vietnam

Vietnam Airlines flies direct from London Heathrow to Ho Chi Minh City on some days of the week, and the flight takes about 12 hours. Otherwise, from London or Manchester, you'll have one stop on the way.

Getting To Mui Ne

The drive from Ho Chi Minh City takes about four hours, or around five from Nha Trang or Da Lat.
