Gibb’s Farm

Gibb’s Farm is best suited to travellers who enjoy space, calm surroundings and a strong sense of place, combined with warm hospitality and understated comfort. The feel is relaxed, elegant and quietly luxurious, with a strong connection to nature, farming traditions and local culture. It works particularly well for couples, families and multi-generational travellers, as well as guests looking for a gentle break between safari areas. The lodge is set on the forested outer slopes of the Ngorongoro Highlands near the town of Karatu, surrounded by coffee plantations, gardens and farmland.

Accommodation is arranged in individual stone cottages scattered throughout the gardens, each offering a high degree of privacy and a homely atmosphere. The cottages are generously sized, typically around 65 to 70 square metres. Each cottage features either one king-size bed or twin beds, and can accommodate up to two adults, with some cottages able to take an additional child on request. Beds are dressed in high-quality linen with mosquito netting, and interiors are decorated in a warm, rustic style using natural materials, handcrafted furniture and locally inspired artwork.

Every cottage includes an en-suite bathroom with a flush toilet, vanity basin and a spacious walk-in shower. Many also feature a freestanding bathtub positioned to look out into the garden or surrounding greenery. Fireplaces are a key feature, making the cottages particularly cosy during cooler evenings. Each unit has a private veranda or terrace with seating, offering views over the gardens, farmland or forest.

In addition to the standard cottages, Gibb’s Farm offers a small number of family cottages. These are larger, usually around 90 to 100 square metres, and include two separate bedrooms with a shared living area. One bedroom is typically configured with a king-size bed, while the second bedroom has twin beds. These cottages can accommodate up to four guests and are ideal for families or small groups travelling together. There are no villas or penthouses in the modern sense, as the emphasis remains on charming, cottage-style accommodation that blends naturally into the landscape.

The main lodge area includes a welcoming lounge with comfortable seating, a fireplace and views across the gardens and valley. Meals are served in the main dining area or outdoors, depending on the weather, and are a central part of the Gibb’s Farm experience. The cuisine is fresh, seasonal and largely sourced from the property’s own gardens, dairy and coffee plantation. Menus combine international influences with local flavours, and special dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.

Facilities at Gibb’s Farm are focused on relaxation, nature and gentle activity rather than high-energy amenities. There is a heated outdoor swimming pool set within the gardens, offering a peaceful place to unwind between excursions. A small spa provides a range of treatments, including massages and wellness therapies, often using natural and locally inspired products. Treatments are designed to be restorative and are offered in a calm, rural setting.

Guests are encouraged to explore the extensive grounds, which include vegetable gardens, coffee fields, forest trails and viewpoints. Guided walks around the farm are available, offering insight into sustainable farming practices, coffee production and local plant life. Cultural activities may include visits to nearby communities, local schools or craft projects, depending on availability and guest interest.

There is no formal gym, but the large grounds and walking trails provide ample opportunity for gentle exercise. The atmosphere is family-friendly, although there are no dedicated children’s clubs or play areas. Children are welcome and often enjoy the open space, farm animals and hands-on nature of the property.

Electricity and connectivity are reliable but discreet, allowing guests to stay connected if needed without detracting from the sense of escape. Evenings are typically quiet and sociable, often spent by the fire or enjoying a relaxed dinner after a day exploring the surrounding safari areas.
