WING FOILING HOLIDAYS

What is Wingsurfing or Wing foiling

Wingsurfing or 'Wingfoil' or 'Winging' is a new board riding sport that is booming all over the world right now. It combines the disciplines of windsurfing, kitesurfing, and foiling, but is also accessible to people with no windsurfing or kitesurfing background (it's just harder).

The basic concept is using the power of a handheld 'kite' or 'wing' whilst standing on an inflatable or hardboard. To start with the beginner would just use a large SUP board with no hydrofoil to get used to kneeling, and then standing, with the wing in light wind conditions. As the confidence in using the wing improved the board size can be reduced, with a hydrofoil fixed to the underside. That's when it really gets really fun! With sufficient wind and a bit of 'pumping' of the wing to generate power, the board lifts and glides smoothly over the water. The first time you are able to get up 'onto' the foil is an exhilarating (and very strange) sensation.

Why is wingsurfing getting so popular?

  • when compared to kitesurfing and kite foiling it is a lot safer and easier, especially as there are no long lines to contend with.
  • the equipment is quite compact so you can 'launch' from small beaches safely (unlike kiting)
  • it is more accessible to a wider range of abilities and can just be a fun day out for the family in the right conditions (without the foil element which is for the more advanced).
