Oliver’s Camp

Oliver’s Camp is best suited to travellers who want a classic, old-style safari experience focused on wildlife, space, and atmosphere rather than polished luxury. The feel is intimate, adventurous and quietly elegant, with a strong emphasis on authenticity and connection to the bush. The camp is ideal for couples, small groups and families with older children who value guiding quality, privacy and a sense of stepping back into the golden age of safari. It is set deep within Tarangire National Park in a remote area known for excellent game viewing, large elephant herds and a true wilderness atmosphere.

Accommodation is provided in a small collection of classic safari tents, designed to blend into the surrounding bush while offering generous space and comfort. Each tent is approximately 45 to 50 square metres including the veranda. The tents are canvas-walled with solid flooring and are positioned well apart to ensure privacy and uninterrupted views into the bush. Beds are proper safari beds with comfortable mattresses, dressed in crisp linen and mosquito netting. Most tents are set up with either one king-size bed or two large single beds, and can accommodate a maximum of two adults. Selected tents can accommodate a third guest using an additional single bed, making them suitable for a child sharing with parents.

Each tent includes a private en-suite bathroom located at the rear, featuring a traditional safari bucket shower with hot water provided on request, a flush toilet, a vanity basin and quality toiletries. Interiors are furnished in a classic safari style using campaign furniture, rugs, lamps and neutral tones that reflect the natural surroundings. Every tent has a shaded private veranda with seating, ideal for relaxing during the heat of the day and watching wildlife pass through camp.

The main camp area is centred around a comfortable mess tent and open-air lounge that acts as the social heart of the camp. This space includes a dining area, a relaxed seating area with sofas and armchairs, and a small reference library with books on wildlife, conservation and African history. The atmosphere is informal and welcoming, encouraging conversation and shared stories after game drives.

Meals are a highlight and are prepared fresh each day using high-quality ingredients. Breakfast is typically enjoyed in camp or out in the bush, depending on the day’s plans. Lunch is relaxed and informal, often served back at camp, while dinner is a more atmospheric affair, usually enjoyed by lantern light under the stars or in the mess tent. Dietary requirements can be catered for with advance notice.

There is no swimming pool, spa or gym, in keeping with the camp’s traditional safari ethos. The emphasis is on time spent exploring the park, resting between activities, and enjoying the natural surroundings. Evenings are often spent around the campfire, sharing drinks and stories while listening to the sounds of the bush.

Activities focus entirely on wildlife experiences within Tarangire National Park. Game drives are led by highly experienced guides with deep knowledge of the area, its animals and its ecosystems. Drives take place in open safari vehicles and are tailored to guest interests, whether that is big game, birds, photography or understanding animal behaviour. Walking safaris are also a key feature, offering the chance to explore the bush on foot with an armed guide and learn about tracks, plants and smaller details often missed from a vehicle.

Oliver’s Camp welcomes families with older children who have an interest in nature and wildlife, although there are no dedicated children’s facilities or play areas. The experience is best suited to those who are comfortable with a more adventurous style of safari and who appreciate the educational aspect of guided walks and drives.

Electricity is limited and designed primarily for lighting and charging small devices, reinforcing the sense of escape from everyday life. Mobile signal is minimal, allowing guests to fully disconnect and immerse themselves in the safari experience.
