Las Nubes de Holbox has to boast the one of the best locations on the isle, situated at the end of the strip of beachfront hotels, it has a far more private and peaceful vibe than other guesthouses. The hotel overlooks a sandbank which is a popular spot for a walk, wading to it in the shallow waters is also a great workout for your calves and thighs, and by night it's the best spot on the island to watch the dazzling sunset.

The hotel has a collection of kayaks, snorkels, paddle boards and bikes for guests to use free of charge, you just have to sign each out at reception. This makes for a wonderful way to explore both the island and water – look out for the manta rays. We tried a different activity on each afternoon, and the fitness element was a welcome addition to our stay. There are three swimming pools at the hotel, though we hardly used them as the sea was so clear, warm and full of fascinating sealife. The hotel is also home to the Orquídea SPA, which offers a range of massages and wellness treatments for guests.

Room-wise you can choose between a bungalow, junior suite or master suite, all of which are nestled around the pools and palm trees – sea views are worth the extra cost if you can afford it. Inside, rooms are spacious and functional, each also has a small terrace/balcony, yet there is so much to explore, you might not spend much time in it.

The beach club is a real highlight of Las Nubes, which is just as popular with non guests who, in the afternoon, will drop by for lunch or a margarita while taking a walk or boatride. The bar men keep the tunes coming and you can feast on seafood dishes like mouthwatering fish tacos or chef's paella of the day. The cabanas are decked out with comfy double beach beds perfect for lazing away the day with a good book.

Breakfast is served on the deck of the El Sabor de Las Nubes Holbox onsite restaurant, offering truly sensational views of the sparkling turquoise water. It's a simple, yet filling affair of coffee, fresh fruit and a selection of sweet freshly baked bread, though you can order from the a la carte should you so wish. The restaurant also offers dishes for lunch and dinner, and the location is fantastic for a post-sunset al fresco evening meal, order the catch of the day and fresh ravioli. The racoons will come out to meet you before being shooed away by staff. Don't forget to head up to La Nube, the rooftop bar for a night cap.
