Set on Zanzibar’s scenic east coast, the center benefits from consistent onshore winds, averaging around 15 knots, with tropical water and air temperatures of approximately 27°C year-round. Two reliable trade wind seasons shape the conditions: the Kaskazi blowing from the northeast between December and March, and the Kusi arriving from the southeast between July and September.
While Zanzibar’s tides can shift dramatically every six hours, Kiwengwa is one of the few spots where deep-water channels ensure rideable conditions even at low tide. With warm water that reaches 29°C in February, no wetsuit is needed—just long, enjoyable sessions in perfectly clear, tropical lagoon water.
The Kiwengwa lagoon caters beautifully to all levels. Beginners and intermediates will appreciate the mix of shallow and deeper water, while more advanced riders can make the most of flat-water conditions created by the protective outer reef. Although the water may become choppier at high tide, riders enjoy predominantly flat sessions throughout the day. On full moon nights, the bright natural light even makes night kiting possible. Kiwengwa also offers several advantages over the better-known spot of Paje. The deep-water channels adjacent to the sandbanks allow for uninterrupted riding across all tide levels, a rare benefit in Zanzibar where many lagoons empty at low tide. This makes the area particularly well-suited for foiling and a top choice for riders who want maximum water time.

Riders must be independent (VDWS Level 4 / IKO Level 3) to rent equipment. For those without a license, a short check-up (USD 20) is required to obtain certification. Additional services—including equipment storage, as well as kite launching, landing, and packing—are available for a small fee.

All kitesurfing courses are taught by professional, certified instructors in flat, shallow water—ideal for safe and steady progression. The teaching team includes IKO-certified instructors and experienced assistants, with lessons kept to a maximum of two students per instructor for personalised coaching. Private lessons can also be arranged for riders seeking one-to-one instruction.
To further enhance the learning experience, the center uses BbTALKIN waterproof communication systems, allowing real-time coaching and instant feedback on the water.

Wing foil rentals are available exclusively to independent riders or students who have completed lessons at the center.
Requirements: ability to foil independently for at least 100 metres (jibes and tacks not required).

Lessons begin with a briefing on the beach, covering basic wind theory, safety, and simulation exercises to prepare for the water. Students then progress onto stable beginner boards, where instructors guide them through the fundamentals: balancing, sail handling, steering, tacking, and returning to shore. The beginner course is designed for anyone eager to gain confidence and become an independent windsurfer, even in light wind conditions.
