Holbox Kitesurf Holidays

Holbox Island is a paradise kitesurfing holiday destination located north of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula and Cancun. At one time, there was just a quiet fishing village on this stunning island, but now it is a sprawling tourist destination. As part of Mexico’s largest ecological reserve, Yum Balam, the South side of the island is mainly covered in wild mangroves, whilst the North side, long stretches of white sandy beaches, has many hotels. However, this is restricted to just one part of the island's 12km long beach. In recent years, the island has become totally flooded on occasion, but this is rare during the main dry tourist season of November to June (also the main wind season).

Holbox is easy to get to via a 2-hour road transfer from Cancun, followed by a short fast-ferry crossing to the island. No cars on the island, just RV’s to ferry you to your chosen property. Many of the once stunning hotels are now a little run down, but there are still a few ‘gems’ in Holbox. It gets very busy during the high season from Christmas through to March.

The Kitesurfing is restricted to specific zones, so it is best to go with the Kitesurf School each day to the best spot for the particular wind direction. As with all of Mexico, the wind pattern is constantly changing, so the Kitesurf School adapt on a day-to-day basis. One, the water is really a paradise, with super warm turquoise water and stunning Kite beaches and sand bars. This is a great location to Learn To Kitesurf, with huge shallow flat water training areas and consistent wind that is generally not too strong. Our partner, Kitesurfing School, has a great range of top-of-the-range equipment for rent, as well as providing top-notch instruction for those who need it.

Holbox is perfect for all types of travellers, but it is especially good for families or couples looking for a beautiful beach holiday with warm waters, easy kitesurf conditions, and stunning beaches.
