Tour Highlights

Head away from the big tourist resorts that some of the Maya Riviera coast is known for, and head inland and North; there is a rich culture filled with history and wild nature. This suggested tour includes a mixture of Mayan ruins and cenotes with two historical towns, finishing with an exceptional, yet less known, kitesurf / Wingfoil beach in El Cuyo, right up in the very North.

Days 1 - 3

5* The St. Regis Kanai Resort

To start your trip, we recommend taking a couple of days to acclimatise after your flight in a unique spot called Kania, just 45 minutes from Cancun airport. Here, you can choose between the adult-only 5* Maya Edition Luxury resort or the stunning 5* St Regis Kania, which is better for families. Both of these properties are set next to each other, deep inside a huge mangrove forest on a stunning beach.

Riviera Maya

The Maya Riviera, or Riviera Maya, is a tropical paradise along Mexico's Caribbean coast, spanning roughly 100 miles from Puerto Morelos to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Renowned for its blend of natural beauty and cultural significance, the region offers pristine white-sand beaches lapped by turquoise waters, lush jungles, and extensive mangrove ecosystems. Beneath its surface lies one of the world’s largest underground river systems, connected to stunning cenotes—natural freshwater sinkholes revered by the ancient Maya.

The area is steeped in Mayan history, with archaeological sites such as Tulum, Cobá, and Chichén Itzá providing glimpses into the sophisticated civilization that once thrived there. These ruins are complemented by contemporary luxury resorts, boutique hotels, and eco-retreats that attract global visitors.

The Maya Riviera also serves as a hub for marine biodiversity, with vibrant coral reefs forming part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest in the world. Days 3 - 4

Today, you will start an unforgettable journey through the ancient Mayan civilization with a guided tour of Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, around 2 hours from Kania. Immerse yourself in this iconic archaeological site's rich history and culture, surrounded by stunning landscapes and fascinating ruins. Your adventure begins with a convenient pick-up from your hotel by your private guide, with a driver and private vehicle. First, visit a traditional Mayan village, where you'll participate in a Mayan healing ceremony guided by a local shaman.

Next, spend approximately 2.5 hours exploring the ancient ruins of Chichén Itzá. Marvel at its famous structures, such as the Temple of Kukulcán, the Ball Court, and the Observatory, as your certified bilingual guide shares intriguing insights into Mayan history, culture, and architecture. After the guided tour, enjoy some free time to wander the site at your own pace, snap photos, and absorb the magnificence of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. To refresh, take a dip in the stunning Cenote Saamal, a natural sinkhole with crystal-clear waters. Spend time swimming, relaxing, and taking in the serene surroundings.

Chichén Itzá is on the outskirts of the small historical town of Valladolid, where you will spend the night in a small boutique hotel. There are some superb places to eat out in Valladolid. Otherwise, your hotel also has a great small restaurant.

Valladolid

Valladolid is a picturesque colonial city located in the heart of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. It enchants visitors with its colourful streets, rich history, and relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Known for its stunning colonial architecture, Valladolid is a place where vibrant facades and cobblestone roads create a timeless charm. The city's central square, Parque Principal Francisco Cantón Rosado, is a hub of activity anchored by the majestic San Servacio Church, which dates back to the 16th century.

A visit to Valladolid offers more than just beautiful architecture; it's also a gateway to Yucatecan culture and cuisine. Local restaurants serve traditional dishes like cochinita pibil, lomitos de Valladolid, and longaniza, providing a true taste of the region. The city is also a haven for art and craftsmanship, with markets and shops showcasing handmade hammocks, embroidered textiles, and pottery. A highlight for many is the Casa de los Venados, a private home-turned-museum housing an extraordinary collection of Mexican folk art.

Nature lovers will be delighted by the cenotes surrounding Valladolid. These natural sinkholes, such as Cenote Zaci, Cenote Ik Kil, and Cenote Samulá, offer crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and exploring. The city is also an ideal base for visiting iconic Mayan ruins. Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is just a short drive away, as is the lesser-known but equally fascinating archaeological site of Ek’ Balam.

What truly sets Valladolid apart is its warm and friendly locals who are eager to share their culture and traditions. The city comes alive during festivals like the Candelaria Festival in February, with vibrant processions, dances, and celebrations. Despite its many attractions, Valladolid retains an authentic and laid-back vibe, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

Easily explored on foot or by bike, Valladolid invites travelers to slow down and savor its charm. Whether you’re wandering through its lively markets, cooling off in a cenote, or marveling at the nearby ruins, Valladolid promises an unforgettable experience filled with color, flavor, and history.

Days 4 - 7

After a superb breakfast, you will have a few hours to explore Valladolid. The main areas to explore are close to your hotel, so it is easy. A private city guide can be provided if needed, but this part of Valladolid is very easy to explore and not that big.

The next stop is the town of Merida, around 2 hours from Valladolid. Mérida, the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatán, is a vibrant city that blends colonial charm, Mayan heritage, and a lively cultural scene. Known as the "White City" for its clean streets and buildings, Mérida offers a rich experience for travelers looking to explore the history, culture, and local flavors.

There is a lot to see and do in and around this historic town, as well as many exceptional restaurants, a highlight of this area. We recommend 3 nights here to make the most of the town itself and include a couple of day tours outside the town. Each night it is good to choose one of the many restaurants that are a short walk from your hotel

Included in this tour is a half-day city tour, but other additional tours include:

Mayan World Museum of Mérida (Gran Museo del Mundo Maya). A must-visit for insights into Mayan history, culture, and artifacts.
Lucas de Gálvez Market . Dive into the local culture by exploring stalls selling fresh produce, handicrafts, and Yucatecan street food.
Cenotes Near Mérida . Swim in crystal-clear underground pools like Cenote Xlacah (at Dzibilchaltún) or the cenotes in the Cuzamá area.

Merida

Mérida, the vibrant capital of the Yucatán Peninsula, is a city that beautifully blends history, culture, and modernity. Known as the "White City" for its clean, bright buildings made of limestone, Mérida is a captivating destination filled with colonial charm and a lively atmosphere. Its streets are lined with colorful facades, bustling markets, and leafy plazas where locals and visitors gather to enjoy the city's warm, welcoming vibe.

The heart of Mérida is the Plaza Grande, a central square surrounded by historical landmarks such as the imposing Mérida Cathedral, one of the oldest in the Americas, and the Casa de Montejo, a 16th-century mansion showcasing colonial architecture. Nearby, you'll find the Government Palace, where vibrant murals narrate the region's history and struggles. Strolling down the famous Paseo de Montejo, you'll encounter grand mansions that hark back to Mérida's henequén boom, when the city was one of the wealthiest in Mexico.

Mérida is a cultural hub, offering a rich tapestry of Yucatecan traditions. Museums such as the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya provide fascinating insights into the Maya civilization, while the city's theaters and cultural centers host traditional music and dance performances, including the lively jarana dances. The city's calendar is packed with events and festivals, such as Noche Blanca, which celebrates art and culture late into the night, and Hanal Pixán, the Yucatán's unique Day of the Dead celebration.

Food lovers will reveal in Mérida's culinary scene, with dishes like panuchos, salbutes, and poc chuc taking center stage. The city's bustling markets, such as Mercado Lucas de Gálvez, are perfect for sampling local flavors or buying fresh produce and artisanal goods. Restaurants range from street-side stalls to upscale establishments, all offering the vibrant flavors of Yucatán cuisine.

Mérida's location makes it an excellent base for exploring the region's natural and historical wonders. Within a short drive, you can visit cenotes for a refreshing swim, discover ancient Mayan ruins like Uxmal, or enjoy the coastal beauty of Celestún, home to pink flamingos and serene beaches. Despite being a growing cosmopolitan city, Mérida retains its traditional roots, with a strong emphasis on community, family, and cultural preservation.

Days 7 - 12

4* Boutique El Cuyo

Ready for some amazing Kitesurfing or Wingfoiling? Your next stop is the small, quiet village of El Cuyo, home to some of the best Kitesurfing and Wingfoiling in the Yucatan. El Cuyo is special as it is relatively little known as of yet, and there are some fantastic new small hotels a stone's throw from a beautiful Kite and Wing beach. The wind here is super reliable from November to May. El Cuyo it is a hidden gem set away from the mass tourism of Holbox, Tulum or Cancun.

We recommend a minimum of 5 nights here.

El Cuyo

Nestled along the North coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, El Cuyo is an authentic fishing village and one of Mexico’s best spots for kitesurfing, kitefoiling, and wingfoiling in Mexico if you want to avoid the crowds. In this serene coastal haven, you’ll find an idyllic blend of natural beauty, culture, and adventure. With wide, untouched beaches, steady very consistent wind, and a warm, tropical climate, El Cuyo is the ideal spot for an amazing kiteboarding or wingfoiling adventure. The water is a beautiful turquoise colour and nice and warm.

There are also a lot of trip in and around the area, so El Cuyo can also make for a great base to explode this less touristic and uncrowded part of the Yucatán Peninsula. Nearby attractions include flamingo nesting sites, pink lagoons, Mayan ruins, cenotes, and colonial towns. Within El Cuyo, no wind activities include paddleboarding, snorkelling with manta rays, dolphin spotting, bird-watching, or biking around local reserves.

The Kitesurfing - There is a huge long beach with 4 or 5 small kitesurf school that operate here. There is a lot of space, so even on a busy day (which is 15 kites), there is always space. Although the main wind direction is side to side-on shore, as with all of Mexico, the wind direct changes a lot. If the wind switches off shore , then the kitesurf schools will go by boat to a fat water sand bar around 30 minutes away, followed by a downwinder back. This is a great day out.

The Wingfoiling - The conditions here are not perfect for learning to Wingfoil, as there can be some small waves making learning more challenging. There are some flat water spots that the school sometimes use when the waves get to much for teaching. For a Wingfoiler who is already up and riding ‘on-foil’ this is a superb Wingfoiling spot. The wind is normally in the 20-25 Knots range in the main November to May wind season, which is perfect for Wing.

So why El Cuyo?

Charming Village Atmosphere - Locals often say, “El Cuyo es tuyo,” meaning “El Cuyo is yours.” The village’s friendly residents and sandy streets invite you to explore, relax in the main plaza, or meet fishermen at the pier to truly experience local life.
