Why we rate this centre

HURA Beach sits right on the edge of the Northern end of the lagoon at Ilha do Guajirú This stretch of coastline is one of the best-kept secrets in world kitesurfing: a warm, shallow lagoon protected from the open Atlantic by a long sandbank, with steady trade winds blowing almost every day for nine months of the year.

Because the lagoon sits behind its sandbank, there is no swell, no shore break and no crashing surf — none of the noise and chop you get at an ocean spot. The water lies flat and glassy from one side to the other, and it stays that way through the day. That kind of silence on the water is genuinely rare, and it is exactly what makes a lagoon like this so special: nothing pushing you around, nothing to fight, just clean flat water and wind. It is what draws freestyle riders here from all over the world, and it is what makes it one of the safest, easiest places on the planet to learn.

Just as important, it stays uncrowded. This isn't a packed, elbow-to-elbow beach — there is space to ride, space to learn without a queue of kites overhead, and room to progress at your own pace.

HURA Beach is an IKO-certified school, founded and led by Joseph, who has more than 25 years on the water and has trained IKO instructors himself. That depth of experience runs through everything the school does. Lessons are structured to take you all the way from your very first session to your first jump, with four clear packages built around where you're starting from and how far you want to go — complete beginners, improvers looking to ride upwind and hold a course, and more experienced riders wanting to push into tricks and jumps.

Teaching happens in that protected, standing-depth lagoon, so you learn in the safest possible environment. Instructors work closely with you on the fundamentals — kite control, body dragging, water starts and riding upwind — before moving you on only when you're ready. The shallow lagoon does half the teaching for you: it protects you while you get it wrong, and rewards you the moment you get it right.

The school runs new Duotone equipment, one of the most respected names in the sport, so whether you're taking a lesson or hiring gear to ride on your own, you're on current, well-maintained kit. Full rental is available — kites, boards and the safety gear that goes with them — so you can travel light and simply turn up and ride.

There's more here than the water. HURA Beach runs guided downwind tours along the coast, boat trips, stand-up paddle, yoga and massage, so there's plenty to fill the lighter-wind hours and the days you want to rest your arms. The on-site restaurant and lounge serves fresh seafood, ceviche and bowls, looking straight out over the lagoon.

A quarter-century of teaching experience, IKO certification, new Duotone gear and one of the finest flat-water lagoons in the world — it's a combination very few schools can offer. The spot has earned its reputation the right way: it's a host venue for the GKA Kite World Tour, and the school carries a strong 4.3-star Google rating across more than 120 reviews. Beginners leave riding; experienced kiters leave having ridden some of the best flat water they'll ever find. Either way, they leave planning to come back.
