Palermo

3* Casa Nostra Boutique Bed and Breakfast

The tour can start any way around, but in this sample itinerary, we will start with the capital city of Palermo. For this tour, we have used a great, centrally located Boutique property set in the winding streets.  Existing for over 2,700 years, Palermo offers a great cultural city experience, amazing food and impressive architecture.

About Palermo +
Palermo is the capital city of Sicily. It is a lively city full of history, culture, and colour. Palermo is a city full of character, history, and energy – a mix of old and new that gives you a real taste of Sicily. The streets are often busy and full of life, with local markets, friendly people, and the smell of street food in the air.

One of the most important sights in Palermo is the Palermo Cathedral, which is a beautiful building that shows different styles from many periods. It has been changed and rebuilt many times, and you can even go up to the roof for a lovely view of the city. Another key place is the Palazzo dei Normanni, also called the Norman Palace. Inside is the Palatine Chapel, with golden mosaics that shine in the light – many people say it’s one of the most beautiful chapels in Europe.

You should also see the Teatro Massimo, which is one of the biggest opera houses in Europe. Even if you don’t go to a show, the building itself is impressive. If you like markets, don’t miss Ballarò Market or Vucciria Market, where you can try fresh food, see local life, and hear the voices of sellers calling out their prices.

A very unusual sight is the Capuchin Catacombs, where you can see real mummies of people who lived hundreds of years ago. It’s a bit strange and might not be for everyone, but it’s something you don’t see every day.

The best time to visit Palermo is in the spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October). The weather is warm but not too hot, and there are fewer crowds. The summer months, especially July and August, can be very hot – sometimes over 35°C – and many locals go away on holiday, so some smaller shops or restaurants might close. Winter is mild, but it can be rainy and less lively.

Marsala

3* Carmine Hotel Bed and Breakfast

Taking a 2 hour drive through the amazing country roads from Palermo to Marsala (or the main dual carriage way - your choice!) The second city stop is Marsala. There is plenty of opportunities to stroll through this gated city.  Stunning food options, vibrant markets and amazing atmospheres on the weekends.  We recommend joining in!

About Marsala +
Marsala is a lovely town on the western coast of Sicily, known for its wine, beautiful views, and peaceful atmosphere. Marsala offers a relaxing and authentic Sicilian experience, with good wine, friendly people, and lovely views. It’s ideal for travellers who enjoy a slower pace and want to explore the quieter side of Sicily. It is smaller and quieter than Palermo, but full of charm, especially for those who enjoy history, good food, and a slower pace.

The most famous thing about Marsala is its Marsala wine, a sweet fortified wine that has been made here for centuries. You can visit local wineries, such as Florio or Pellegrino, to learn how the wine is made and enjoy a tasting. It's a fun and relaxing experience, especially for adults who enjoy trying local drinks.

One of the main sights in the town itself is the historic centre, with its elegant buildings, narrow streets, and pretty squares. The Cathedral of Marsala, also called St. Thomas of Canterbury Cathedral, stands in the main square and is a nice place to visit. Not far from there, you can also explore the Archaeological Museum of Baglio Anselmi, which holds the remains of a real ancient Phoenician ship – one of the few you can see in the world.

The best time to visit Marsala is in the spring (April to June) or autumn (September to early November), when the weather is warm and pleasant but not too hot. These seasons are perfect for walking around the town, visiting wineries, and enjoying the countryside. Summer, especially July and August, can be very hot and a bit too dry for long walks, although the beaches nearby are nice for swimming. Winter is cooler and quieter, and while you may find some rain, it’s still milder than in most places in northern Europe.
