PORTO BOTTE OVERVIEW
Porto Botte is the name of the bay that belongs to the tiny town of Giba, and is the windiest kitesurf spot in southern Sardinia. It lies on the southwest corner of the island by the narrow point between Sardinia and Sant’Antioco island. The surrounding of Porto Botte is country land with lots of vineyards, and lagoons where you can see flamingos and other rare birds.
The wind systems traveling across the Med get funneled through this gap and create some of the best wind stats in Europe. Because of this funneling effect, wind forecasts aren't always accurate, and will show the wind to be blowing less than it really is.
Sardinia is one of the most beautiful areas in Italy, and has so much more to offer with an interesting history, wild mountainous interior, vibrant towns with local traditions, and colourful festivals. Porto Botte is a great kitesurf holiday destination, not only for the amazing wind, but also for non kitesurfing friends and family members. There is a wide variety of activities for everyone, and the area of Porto Botte is so beautiful and interesting.
THE KITESURF SPOTS
Around Porto Botte there are several awesome spots that cater for different wind directions and types of kitesurfing.You can reach them all in under an hour by car.
On Sant’antioco island 19 km away you have: Spiaggia Salina & Spiaggia Grande they're two beautiful freestyle spots with N-NW-NE winds, Spiaggia di Coequaddus is an awesome wave/freestyle spot with E-SE winds. The spot Funtanamare, 50 km away, it’s a hard wave spot, which works with N-NW winds.
The long stunning beach Porto Pino, just 6 km away, is an amazing freestyle/wave spot that works with NW-W-SW winds. If you want to visit two wave riding heavens you can reach Chia for E-SE/W-SW winds in about an hours drive, or the magic Sinis peninsula for N-NW winds in about 2 hours.
All spots work with cross and cross-onshore winds, no tides, and no currents so they are suitable for all levels of kitesurfing, some wave spots are recommended only for expert riders.
THE WIND AND WEATHER IN PORTO BOTTE
Two wind patterns operate in Porto Botte. The Mistral wind comes from the northwest, left to right cross-onshore and is super-consistent, usually bringing nice weather too. During the spring, march-may, the waves are perfect for wave riding, in turn the summer is great for a learn to kitesurf holiday and freestyle, as the water is much calmer.
The Scirocco wind comes from the southeast, right to left cross-onshore. Usually it blows in May and October, when it reaches 5bft you can be sure to have an unforgettable wave session at Chia!
In the summer temperatures range from 24 to 32°C and in winter from 15 to a pleasant 20°C. The kite range is 7-12 m for a rider of around 75 kg.
THE KITESURFING SEASON IN PORTO BOTTE
The best time to visit Porto Botte for a kitesurfing holiday is between March and October, when the wind is at it's strongest and most reliable. In this time kite sizes range from 7 - 12 m for a man of around 75kg.
The winter months are often just as windy, though the weather is much stormier. However the winter is a great time to go for waves, and you can have some incredible wave riding days, with strong wind throughout the winter.
THE NIGHTLIFE IN PORTO BOTTE
The area surrounding the bay of Porto Botte is very calm, with only 1500 people living in the small town of Giba. The biggest town along the coast is Sant' Antico Island, a ten minute drive from the kitesurfing beach, here you will find restaurants, and a few beach front bars. The nightlife here is upbeat in the summer months, with live music, and a festival in the summer. There is also 2 discos which open up for July and August. In the off season the nightlife is virtually non existent.
An hours drive is a beautiful town called Cagliari, with a huge number of restaurants, bars, pubs, and shopping.
KIDS IN PORTO BOTTE
Porto Botte is a great kitesurf destination to take kids, the atmosphere is so friendly and welcoming. The extra activities are great for families, and the summer is a great time for kids who are old enough, to learn how to kitesurf on the holiday. However there aren't kids clubs available, or big hotels with pools, and kids facilities.
