Gokova Kitesurf Holidays Overview

Located in southern Turkey 1 hour from Dalaman, Gokova Bay is a dream kitesurfing location for all levels with super reliable summer winds and a large flat water estuary set within a nature reserve.

The town stretching from the sea up In to the surrounding hillside, is built in the traditional style of the area which has a Swiss chalet feel. Although just a little town it is a popular Turkish holiday area which gives it a real local vibe and very welcoming feel.

Seven rivers run in to the bay, which make the water extremely clear and very unsalty! And with no permanent building allowed on the coast there are very few such pristine kiting spots with an fabulous local kite school available.

Service rating : Fantastic service and advice choosing a holiday. Efficient nd of the phone. Excellent service after booking answering questions and sorting and problems.
Product : Flight and car hire were excellent all very straight forward, met at the airport and just an hours drive. The Yuclelen was clean and very friendly, excellent breakfast on the terrace. Lovely pools but need to choose times to go when it is quieter, it is a very family Turkish hotel. The rooms in the new part and more spacious and modern. Personally for us the hotel and town served a purpurse for the kitesurfing, I don't think we would go there for an actual holiday not enough accessibility to small coves or areas to get away from the crowds. (This is obviously personal, the town is fun to wonder around in the evenings and plenty of restaurants to choose from, we preferred the quieter ones on the sea front away from the town or short journeys by car.). We found a lovely hotel called Baga which is definitely worth a look, more upmarket in a lovely cove, great dinner and setting.
The wind and general conditions were excellent, very predictable, nice lazy breakfast with wind kicking in around 11am till 6pm. However the beach and shallow areas off it were extremely busy with unpredictable learners and no rules! The good kiters would then annoyingly kite in the foot of water along the beach jump turning and doing tricks when you were trying to come in or launch! However after a few days of getting used to it you learnt the best way out and time to go and could then sail away and around to a different part of the bay and kite virtually on your own. Again was a bit tricky finding your way in. We were recommended to hire and store our kit at 'Always Windy' however this is a very poor set up, (In fact it is now an agent as the owner has moved to Greece so is called something different.) lockers very shabby and the place heaving with people so no place for family to sit or to chill between kites, the beach area in front was littered with kites so not sure how you even rig up. However the girl in charge was very laid back, friendly and helpful. We quickly found a much quieter spot at the far end of the beach called 'KiteMaximum" excellent service, lockers, showers and people. Great bean bags and hammocks for our non kilter to hang out on, near to the lovely restaurant and lagoon for swimming and watching other family members kite. Can't recommend them enough, so helpful, giving tips, nothing was too much but also leaving us alone to take over their hammocks and just chill too. They also have a link with Kyak hire and a boat to kite area based at the hotel beach so split parties could go ahead to kite. My 12 year old daughter and I hired a Kyak a few times and kayaked over to the kite area, chilled, swam and had lunch whilst boys kited then I swapped and Dad kayaked her back. It is also an easy 20 min walk from hotel if an advance party wanted to come back. I would recommend this for intermediate kiters plus, if you are aware that you need to be patient sail out and find your own space. I would not recommend it for beginners during peak season time. (Having said that perhaps at quieter times it would be a good place to learn, the instructors have helmets with walkie talkies which sounded a good way to learn.). It is very Turkish so not many English speaking instructors. All in all it was an excellent kiting holiday, we all came back exhausted having had 9 days on the water the boys on their second kiting holiday annoyingly are jumping and doing many other tricks! So thank you Stuart at Planet kitesurf a good recommendation. Mia wasn't too bored!

The Wind In Gokova

Due to its unique location in the middle of a deep valley facing to the west, even when the Meltemi is not blowing, The mounts surrounding the bay heat up in the summer sun and create a wonderfully constant, reliable thermal wind. Generally the wind starts to kick in around 11 am so you can have a leisurely morning and then kite till sunset!

The Kitesurf Spot In Gokova

Gokova Bay has a lot of space although in recent years this previously undiscovered spot has become quite popular making the water quite busy during the high season periods of July & August.  However, this is still one of the best kitesurf locations in the Med.

With a width of 3km’s and shallow water for 150m out, the bay is suitable for all levels of riders.  There are no obstacles such as trees, buildings or rocks and with seven rivers entering the bay the water is clear, clean and not very salty!!

The Kitebeach is around 1 km from the town so either 25 minute walk or a short drive; Planet recommend including car hire in your holiday booking with us. This area is a nature reserve with very limited facilities other than the kitesurf schools. There is a little area designated for sunbathers. There are a couple of shops as you turn off the main road, so if you need anything stock up there or in town before you head to the beach.

The Accommodation In Gokova

As with all of our resort Planet work with the very best accommodations in the resort that we feel offer the best overall value for a good quality holiday. Activities In Gokova

In the unlikely event of a non windy day or for those who do no partake in events on the water this is an astounding area to explore. There are great mount bike routes and trails or if you prefer to explore a little further then we can arrange car rental for you. This whole coastline is incredible!

There are many boat trips that you can take from the marina along the coast or on the river.. great on a hot day!

For a high days shopping Marmaris is worth the drive and a walk around the marina to check out the yachts and gulets is definitely recommended.

Nightlife In Gokova

Akyaka has some wonderfull restaurants serving a wide variety of both Turkish and other European dishes. You must try one of the fish restaurants on the river as they have the local fishing of the day!

A couple of the local bars can get pretty lively as the local beer Efes is very palatable..

This area is not really for the big party people but you can aways travel to Marmaris for a wild night, or to sample the atmosphere  in one of the marina restaurants.

Children In Gokova

This spot is wonderfull for older children to learn to kitesurf as it is so safe. For other children if they are happy performing on the beach or in the water then bring them along to the kite spot. If they need other entertainment then it's best they stay behind at the hotel or on the beach in Akyaka so the installations are all just a short walk away.
