This area abounds with world-renowned national parks and UNESCO World Heritage Sites to visit.
If you like history and culture you’ll be in your element. Visit the historic and mysterious 5th Century Sigiriya Rock Fortress – a monumental granite icon of Sri Lanka that rises from the surrounding jungle. Its neighbour Pidurangala Rock is an alternative climb with amazing views of the Sigiriya fortress. Alternatively, you can head to the Dambulla Cave Temple, which is widely regarded as one of the best-preserved temple complexes in Sri Lanka. Want more? Accompanied by the hotel's resident environmentalist, you can experience on-site wildlife trails, possibly seeing the elusive Fishing Cat. They’ll guide you on an exciting nocturnal wildlife walk, or follow the Loris Night Trail which is a unique experience in Sri Lanka. Armed with red light emitting headlamps, that don’t disturb the wildlife, the environmentalist will take you through the Loris Conservation Site explaining the habitat of this nocturnal primate. You’ll listen to its calls and get an understanding of the behaviour of this elusive mammal in its natural environment.
Sigiriya
Sigiriya Rock, part of Sri Lanka's famed Cultural Triangle, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its historical, archaeological, and architectural significance. Often referred to as the "Lion Rock," Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress that rises nearly 200 meters above the surrounding plains. It was built in the 5th century AD by King Kashyapa, who transformed it into a royal palace, citadel, and garden complex.
The site features a series of terraced gardens, water gardens, and boulder gardens, considered masterpieces of ancient landscape design. Midway up the rock, the Mirror Wall, once polished to reflect the king’s image, is adorned with ancient graffiti and poems left by visitors from centuries past. Nearby, the Sigiriya frescoes depict celestial maidens, or "Apsaras," painted with vibrant pigments that have endured for millennia.
At the summit of the rock, the ruins of the king’s palace offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Sigiriya is often viewed as the pinnacle of Sri Lankan engineering, blending art, urban planning, and natural beauty.
The broader Cultural Triangle includes nearby ancient cities like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, as well as the Dambulla Cave Temples. Together, these sites offer a glimpse into Sri Lanka's rich history, culture, and Buddhist heritage. Sigiriya stands out as an iconic landmark, combining natural grandeur with human ingenuity.

4* Luxury Kappalady Villa

If you are a kitesurfer, or would like to learn, you're going to love Kalpatiya lagoon (and it's smaller sister lagoon of Kapaladdy). Renowned as one of the world's top places to kitesurf, conditions don’t get much better. You can pretty much guarantee wind from May to October, which combined with the large, shallow and flat water lagoons make Kalpitiya a dream destination for kitesurfers.
The Luxury Kappalady Villa is located right on the lagoon so you don’t have to travel to the kite spot. If you want to learn there is a kitesurf school onsite who also rents equipment if you already know what you are doing.

From Kalpatiya you head to Colombo airport which takes around three hours by road. From there it is a short three hour flight to Male airport in the Maldives. Our representative will meet you and take you to a luxury speedboat for the 45 minute transfer to Anantara Dhigu (or an alternative Maldives resort of your choice).
Anantara is a luxury Maldives resort that offers extremely high quality scuba diving, surfing and kitesurfing. The surf school is regarded as one of the best in the Maldives, offering everything from beginner beach breaks (hard to find in The Maldives) to peeling playful waves ideal for intermediates to impressive barrels for the experts.
The windy season in the Maldives is from May to September, and December to February. During these months there are superb conditions for kitesurfing and kite foiling. The wind is much lighter here than in Sri Lanka, but kitesurfing on the stunning crystal clear waters is an incredible experience.
Finally, the Maldives also delivers beneath the waves with some of the best scuba diving on the planet. The Anantara Resort is part of the South Ari Atoll that’s well known as having some of the top dive sites in the Maldives. Want to dive with Manta Rays? From July to October it is one of the most reliable Manta spots on the planet. Experienced divers will love the channel dives and diving on the tips of underwater mountains surrounded by deep water, known as ‘tilas’, that attract hundreds of reef sharks and an abundance of marine life.
Maldives
Although world-renowned as a luxurious honeymoon and diving destination, the Maldives remains relatively undiscovered when it comes to kitesurfing. Although there are over 160 resorts and a multitude of exquisite islands, there are just a few islands that have unobstructed lagoons facing the prevailing wind direction, backed up by professional kitesurf schools. That is why we, at Planet Kitesurf Holidays, have personally visited and inspected the resorts we offer and hand-picked only the best islands to provide you with a kitesurfing holiday like no other.
Although the Maldives is not a high wind destination, from the months of May to October, these islands can make for a stunning kitesurf holiday for couples and families. The Maldives is home to some of the most beautiful small islands on Earth, providing safe havens with no distractions, allowing you to simply relax and enjoy your time off, surrounded by turquoise lagoons and warm crystal clear waters. Our hand-picked island resorts offer world class facilities for both couples and families, with some of the best value Maldives holidays prices during the 'low season' windy period.
